ASTM E1105: Determination of Water Penetration of Installed Exterior Windows, Skylights, Doors, and Curtain Walls by Uniform or Cyclic Static Air Pressure Difference

ASTM E1105: Determining the Resistance of Windows, Curtain Walls, Skylights, and Doors to Water Penetration

During ASTM E1105 field testing, water is applied to the outdoor face and exposed edges simultaneously with static air pressure. The ASTM E1105 testing can be applied to any curtain wall area or to windows, skylights, or doors alone. It is intended to determine the resistance to water penetration through specified building assemblies. If water does penetrate the assembly, but does not result in failure it may have ill effects on the performance of the materials, sealant, insulation, or laminated glass. However, ASTM E1105 is not used to address these issues or concerns.

CONDUCTING ASTM E1105 TESTING

The best time to conduct the ASTM E1105 field testing is after the window, skylight, curtain wall, or door assemblies are initially installed and before interior work has been completed. By conducting the testing before interior work is complete, testers have easier access to the surfaces and can identify water penetration. Otherwise, parts of the interior materials will need to be removed in order to conduct the actual water penetration testing.

To conduct the actual testing, a valve on the water-spray system is adjusted so that the intake water is being delivered at the calibrated pressure. The water pressure and rate must be maintained for 15 minutes over the testing area. During the test, the interior of the wall is observed and the tester will take note of any water penetration. After the 15 minutes are over, stop the water spray and inspect the area for any additional evidence of water penetration.
